John and the Glory of Christmas

Passage: John 1:14-21

Preacher: John Huizinga

Series: The Four Gospel Christmas

Category: Christmas

Summary:

The Four Gospel Christmas, Part 4 The gospel of John describes Christmas in a far different way than the stories of Matthew and Luke.

Detail:

The gospel of John describes Christmas in a far different way than the stories of Matthew and Luke. Instead of giving us descriptions and accounts of Mary and Joseph and Bethlehem and shepherds, he reveals Jesus, God come in the flesh. He chooses his phrases, words, even syllables carefully. There are 496 syllables in his Christmas poem. 496 i...s a triangular and a perfect number. It is also the numerical value of the words translated ‘one and only Son’ in verse 14 of this first chapter of John: The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. Jesus is the perfect and complete response of God. He is full of both grace and truth. He is God and man among us. John will end his gospel with 496 words in chapter 21, a final story of reconciliation and redemption. It all fits together, he is telling us. The glory of Christmas is God coming to save us. This glory demands a response. A response that receives him for who he is, and follows the light of his life.
